Woodstock in Bloom
In 2009, for the third year in succession, Woodstock has been awarded a GOLD standard in the Thames Valley and Chilterns Regional Britain in Bloom competition. The awards, presented annually by the Royal Horticultural Society, are given to towns of different populations and sizes for the way they present themselves, for the floral displays and for the environmental sensitivity and sustainability with which the green areas are managed. Leader of the Council's Woodstock in Bloom group, Cllr Pauline Richardson said, "This year we were particularly commended for our video presentation that demonstrated the extent to which the wider community are involved in making the town the exiting place it is in which to live. The primary school, the churches, the businesses and simply ordinary residents all make the effort and this third gold award makes all the hard work worthwhile."
Woodstock is a beautiful town. Everyone says so. Hundreds of thousands of visitors every year come to Woodstock and take pleasure in the Cotswold architecture and the streets lined with cottages which, in summer, are ablaze with the colour. The Town Council, the businesses and the residents all work to ensure that Woodstock's floral displays do justice to the town's unique character.
It isn't simply the floral displays either. The town's watermeadows and its nature reserve on the old railway line at Budds Close are havens for wildlife and quiet contemplation in an unspoilt and natural environment. Woodstock's efforts have impressed the judges of the Thames and Chiltern region of the Britain in Bloom competitions. Woodstock has consistently been winner or joint winner of the Small Towns Category and has been given Silver Gilt awards in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and Gold in 2007 and 2008. In 2006 the town was given a special award for Best Environmental and Conservation Project.
