Woodstock in Bloom
The awards for Bucks, Oxon and
Berkshire region of Britain in Bloom were announced today 21st September.
Woodstock achieved its highest ever marks and the judges gave Woodstock a
gold medal and invited the town, with Bray in Berkshire, to represent the
three counties in the national finals in August 2012. Woodstock also won the
regional award for the Best Commercial Participation. This rewarded the many
individual displays by the town's businesses and the generous support of our
sponsors including Blenheim Estates and One Village.
The judges wrote that "This
outstanding Oxfordshire town boasts an entry that is worthy of its fine
surroundings." Those singled out for praise included the communal gardens at
Rye Grass, The work of Glynnis Eastwood with the four year olds at the
Primary School where the wormery caught their attention, Mick Flinn's orchid
lawn, Mr and Mrs Lewington's colourful display at Spencer Court, the
community woodland, the Girl Guides and all the weeders and litter pickers
who took part in the yellow army.
From the three counties the judges picked out only one single individual for a special award for "Outstanding Commitment to the Community." Those who know of the Woodstock in Bloom team will not be surprised that this went to Cllr Pauline Richardson who, with others, has created Woodstock in Bloom over more than twenty years. Fellow Woodstock in Bloom stalwarts, Barbara Doubtfire and Dr Robert Edwards were thrilled to see Pauline presented with a splendid inscribed glass bowl to great applause.
Woodstock is a beautiful town. Everyone says so. Hundreds of thousands of visitors every year come to Woodstock and take pleasure in the Cotswold architecture and the streets lined with cottages which, in summer, are ablaze with the colour. The Town Council, the businesses and the residents all work to ensure that Woodstock's floral displays do justice to the town's unique character.
It isn't simply the floral displays either. The town's watermeadows and its nature reserve on the old railway line at Budds Close are havens for wildlife and quiet contemplation in an unspoilt and natural environment. Woodstock's efforts have impressed the judges of the Thames and Chiltern region of the Britain in Bloom competitions. Woodstock has consistently been winner or joint winner of the Small Towns Category and has been given Silver Gilt awards in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and Gold in 2007, 2008 and 2009 In 2006 the town was given a special award for Best Environmental and Conservation Project.
